This research uses the latest available data on mental health status in California, the 2001 California Health Interview Survey. We estimate a mental health production function controlling for age, sex, marital status, race/ethnicity, smoking, exercise, medical care use, and community social capital. We hypothesize that higher levels of community social capital are associated with higher level of mental health, where this relationship is subject to diminishing returns.
